Electric Cars: The Basics
For those of you new to zero-emission electric driving, we recommend a read of the following articles:
Sign up to the e-zoomed Electric Living newsletter
If you are a regular visitor to the e-zoomed electric vehicle (EV) platform and in receipt of the e-zoomed Electric Living Blog & Shop newsletter, you may have read that e-zoomed and QDOS Accident Assistance are working in partnership to provide plug-in electric car accident management support to e-zoomed customers.
Recently, during one of many conversations I have with e-zoomed founder, Ashvin Suri, I was asked to outline what an e-zoomed customer might experience should they contact us for accident management assistance. Please read on as I explain the benefits available to you.
First thing to note is that advice is only a telephone call away. If you have been involved in an accident in your battery-electric vehicle (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), simply call QDOS Accident Assistance on 0800 093 0892 or contact us via the accident management link on the e-zoomed EV platform, you will be connected to one of our experienced, UK based accident claims advisors.
During the initial call we will record accident details and outline the options available to you, the electric car owner. If you are happy for us to act on your behalf, we will then contact the other driver and their insurance company to obtain an admission of liability. This can be completed in as little as 10 minutes but during the current pandemic and for more complex claim circumstances, it may take longer. In any event we will look to do this as soon as possible.
Let us now look at the process following an accident where you were not at fault. Examples of which may be where you have slowed down or stopped in a line of traffic but the car following you has failed to notice and collided with the rear of your vehicle or perhaps you are driving along the main road and a vehicle has emerged without due care from the side road causing a collision or you were parked and someone drove into you.
The replacement electric vehicle (EV)
At this point if your plug-in electric vehicle is undriveable or not road legal as a result of the accident we will, as soon as possible, and if driveable, for the duration of the repair, arrange delivery of a suitable replacement electric vehicle for you to use.
We will try to provide a like for like replacement, however, when this is not possible you will be offered an electric vehicle of equivalent standard and specification to your own. It is good to note that our electric vehicles are presented in pristine condition and for your convenience can be delivered to your home, workplace or the chosen repair centre.
Upon delivery our driver will show you around your replacement EV and ask you to sign a vehicle condition report. This should take no longer than five minutes and you will be on your way.
Inspection and repair
A qualified engineer will inspect your zero-emission pure electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid electric car and confirm repair costs and a suitable booking in date will be agreed at one of our repair centres. Your vehicle will be repaired to the highest standards and you will be kept up to date with progress throughout.
Shortly before completion you will be contacted to arrange a convenient time for you to collect your repaired electric vehicle. At the same time you can simply leave your replacement electric vehicle at the repair centre ready for us to collect.
If your vehicle is damaged beyond repair
If on inspection your electric vehicle is deemed uneconomical to repair, we can assist you in obtaining the best possible settlement from the insurer. Our engineer will provide a report indicating an accurate market value of your electric vehicle based on its pre-accident condition, mileage and service record.
Please note that it can take several weeks for an insurer to make payment following a vehicle being written off, if this is the case you can continue to use the replacement electric vehicle that we have provided until such time as your insurance settlement reaches your bank account.
It’s good to know that should you be unfortunate to find yourself in this position e-zoomed have an ever-increasing range of electric vehicles for you to lease or outright purchase at very competitive prices.
Other benefits
Under normal circumstances when making a claim you would have to pay your insurance policy excess, often running into hundreds of pounds, however, we will recover this directly from the other drivers insurance so that you do not have to pay anything out of your own pocket.
Your no claims bonus will also remain unaffected as you will not be claiming against your own insurance policy. This of course provides added benefit when you come to renew your electric car insurance cover.
The process following an accident if you were at fault is somewhat different because you will be making a claim against your own insurance policy. We can still organise repairs at one of our repair centres and your insurance cover may entitle you to a small courtesy car for the duration of the repair. We also have a number of electric vehicle hire options for you to consider should you wish.
In summary
You will benefit from our experience gained in dealing with many thousands of road traffic accident claims over the last 16 years. We are here to help you at what can be a very stressful time. Our aim is to minimize the time you are without your electric vehicle and provide mobility options whilst you are.
